We are thrilled to announce a new publication by our 2D-PRINTABLE partners from UNISTRA and BeD: “Covalent organic framework-based Li-S batteries: functional separators promoting Li+ transport and polysulfide trapping”, featured in Journal of Materials Chemistry A.
Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) are a promising alternative to Li-ion batteries due to their high theoretical specific capacity, but their performance is hindered by the “shuttle effect” caused by soluble polysulfides. This study investigates the use of Kagome-shaped imine-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as functional modifiers for polypropylene separators in LSBs. The research highlights the use of a COF-based separator, KS60@Celgard, which significantly improves LSB performance by mitigating the shuttle effect and enhancing lithium ion diffusion. The modified separator achieves a specific discharge capacity of 850 mA h gS−1 at C5, with a high Li+ diffusion coefficient of 1.6 × 10−7 cm² s−1. The study also shows that the COF content and linker type strongly influence battery performance, with optimized separators reducing polysulfide content and promoting effective electrocatalysis. Overall, this work demonstrates the potential of COF-modified separators in enhancing the performance of LSBs by balancing polysulfide retention, Li+ transport, and electrocatalytic activity.
Congratulations to UNISTRA and BeD on this outstanding achievement!
