Organisation Introduction

Trinity College Dublin was founded in 1592 and is Ireland’s oldest university. It is situated in an enclosed campus in the city centre containing a combination of historic and modern buildings from the 17th to the 21st century. Academically, TCD consists of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. It is further divided into 23 schools, offering degree and diploma courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Trinity is ranked 1st in Ireland and 98th in the world. 2D-PRINTABLE will be hosted within both the School of Physics and in the state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities within the AMBER centre, which is housed in the 6000 m2 CRANN institute on the TCD campus.

Why 2D-PRINTABLE?

Prof Coleman’s main interest is researching chemical physics of low-dimensional nanostructures; carbon nanotubes, graphene and 2-dimensional inorganic materials. This work focuses on the exfoliation of van der Waals bonded nano-materials, leading to the formation of dispersions, suspensions and solutions of nanostructures. Such liquid processing allows the production of coatings, thin films and composites for applications such as electro-mechanical sensors, printed electronics and energy storage materials. This combination of expertise makes Prof Coleman the ideal choice to lead 2D-PRINTABLE.

Involvement in 2D-PRINTABLE

The Coleman group in TCD will work on almost all areas of the project. We will develop new 2D materials, characterise their properties and use printing methods to deposit them as thin films. We will perform detailed measurements to determine the characteristics of these films, focusing on their electrical properties. We will develop printing techniques to stack these films into various electronic device configurations. Finally, we will perform electrical tests on these structures and characterise their performance as devices such as transistors and diodes.
