Optimised ink-production protocols achieved!

The 2D-PRINTABLE partners have developed advanced protocols for producing nanosheet inks via ultrasonication-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) and electrochemical exfoliation (EE), specifically tailored for Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) deposition and inkjet printing. The composition of these 2D inks plays a critical role in determining network morphology, directly linking ink formulation optimization to the film and device performance. To achieve this, the 2D-PRINTABLE team fine-tuned the rheological properties of the inks by incorporating stabilizing polymers, adjusting concentrations, size-selecting nanosheets, and performing solvent exchanges.

The quality of the networks deposited using LS and inkjet printing was rigorously assessed through a suite of characterization techniques, including atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), focused ion beam–scanning electron microscope tomography (FIB-SEM-NT), optical transmission scans, and electrical measurements. This comprehensive analysis of the deposited networks has significantly advanced the understanding of optimal ink formulations for LS and inkjet printing of EE- and LPE-derived nanosheets.
