New Perspective Article on the Future of 2D Electronic Biosensors

The 2D-PRINTABLE partner UNISTRA has recently co-authored the perspective article Engineering Two-Dimensional Electronic Biosensors, published in Nature Reviews Electrical Engineering.

The article reviews the rapidly evolving field of 2D material-based biosensors and examines how graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), and other atomically thin materials can enable highly sensitive detection of biological and environmental signals. The authors show that, while these technologies have demonstrated exceptional sensitivity, future progress will depend on improving selectivity, stability, reproducibility, and performance under physiological conditions. They also emphasize the importance of standardized benchmarking, advanced biofunctionalization strategies, and AI-assisted data analysis to accelerate translation into real-world applications.

Researchers from the 2D-PRINTABLE consortium contributed their expertise in 2D materials, interface engineering, and biosensing technologies, helping to define a roadmap for the development of next-generation sensing platforms. The review concludes that the integration of tailored 2D materials into wearable and portable devices could enable continuous health monitoring, advanced point-of-care diagnostics, and future Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) applications.
